The goal of the renovation was to make the kitchen look bigger, lighter, and airier. In addition, new amenities are included that simply were not widespread 30 years ago. All of this was done while remaining on a reasonable budget.
For the new kitchen, the homeowners selected the navy blue/gray and white theme for a contemporary look that will be stylish for years to come.
The important design work you don’t see in the photos includes the amenities that make your tasks easier and more pleasant, including soft close cup hinges and drawer glides, wood tiered cutlery dividers, independently spinning lazy Susan carousels, pull-out shelves in bottom cabinets to make it easy to reach large items in back, as well as pull-out waste baskets.
The asymmetric island was a requirement and the new design provides seating for four people.
Before Renovation
The homeowners have lived in this home for a long time and the kitchen was original to the house dated circa 1995.
The warm wood tones were very stylish for the time period. There was plenty of storage cabinetry and the kitchen was spacious with a large island that provided countertop work space and storage space, plus seating for three people.
The microwave placement over the stove was common at the time.
When planning a renovation, keeping some elements in the same location, such as the sink in this case, saves money in the budget. However, the new layout in this case needed the stove moved to an outside wall to provide proper ventilation. This is where an experienced designer makes the difference with knowledge of current building code requirements as well as insight about how to make the kitchen work best for your needs.

After Renovation
The stove was relocated to the outside wall allowing for proper cooking ventilation. A new below the counter microwave was placed in the new island.
The display shelf is actually a floating shelf tucked in tightly between the upper display cabinets — an innovative way to add this special element.
The stainless steel apron sink is from Nantucket Sinks.
Viatera by LG for the countertops offered the perfect blend of white gray and a hint of earthy tones with Aura.
Custom depth cabinets were a priority to the homeowners in order to make a much needed full-depth refrigerator appear to be counter-depth.
